El premio se concede a la trayectoria seguida por el Jardín Botánico de Santa Catalina, desde su inicio en 1999 como mero proyecto, y sobre todo, desde la elaboración de un Plan Director en 2012, que ha hecho del Jardín un recurso turístico de primer orden no sólo a nivel municipal y provincial, sino también a nivel autonómico.
Entre sus señas de identidad, destaca el dinamismo y capacidad de atracción social, con multitud de actividades que lleva promoviendo durante años y que facilitan la desestacionalización del sector turístico ya que se ha convertido en un elemento clave en la estructuración de la oferta lúdica del entorno.
Es un producto que vende patrimonio natural y cultural, además de aunar los esfuerzos de los cinco juntas administrativas que componen el Ayuntamiento de lruña de Oca, con una vocación de crecimiento cualitativo y transversal con otros sectores.
Ha sido designado como primer parque estelar del mundo por parte de la fundación Starlight, creada por el Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias.Por su apuesta por el turismo familiar y el consecuente trabajo en pos del Sello de Turismo Familiar de la Federación Española de Familias Numerosas (FEFN).
